Introduction
As we age, it becomes crucial to take special care of our diet. Proper nutrition is essential for our overall health and well-being. Sesame seeds, also known as thill, are a powerhouse of nutrients and can be a valuable addition to our diet, especially as we grow older.
The Nutritional Value of Sesame Seeds
Sesame seeds are an excellent source of healthy fats, proteins, B vitamins, minerals, fibers, antioxidants, and other beneficial plant compounds. According to Ayurveda, sesame seeds help balance the vat Dosha in the body. Sesame oil, derived from these seeds, contains linoleic acid, palmitic acid, and stearic acid, making it suitable for both body and head massages known as abhyang.
Benefits of Sesame Seeds for Aging Individuals
1. Rejuvenating Quality: Sesame seeds have a rejuvenating effect, making individuals physically stronger. They are rich in calcium, which strengthens bones, muscles, and joints. These seeds also provide a good source of plant-based protein for vegetarians.
2. Promotes Digestion: As we age, constipation becomes a common complaint. Sesame seeds act as an excellent laxative, improving digestion and facilitating smooth bowel movements.
3. Prevents Neurodegenerative Diseases: Sesame seeds contain phenolics such as lignans, which possess high antioxidant properties. Reducing oxidative stress can help prevent diseases like Alzheimer’s and memory loss.
4. Promotes Heart Health and Reduces Osteoporosis Risk: The monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats in sesame seeds help maintain good cholesterol levels and lower bad cholesterol. Phytoestrogens present in sesame seeds, including glycanine, may also help reduce the risk of osteoporosis.
5. Improves Appearance: Sesame seeds contain vitamin E and oil, which are beneficial for aging skin and hair. They repair damaged cells, improving skin texture. Chewing sesame seeds is also excellent for maintaining healthy teeth and gums.
