The Benefits of Olive Oil
Olive oil, known as jaitun katel in Hindi, is a good source of healthy fats that are essential for the body. When consumed in moderation as part of a balanced diet, olive oil can provide excellent benefits. In this blog, we will explore five benefits of using olive oil.
1. Breast Health
Olive oil contains monounsaturated fats and polyphenols, which have been found to lower the risk of developing breast cancer. Regular consumption of olive oil as part of your diet can help prevent and slow down breast cancer. Additionally, in some parts of the world, olive oil is used for breast firming. A daily breast massage with olive oil for 5 minutes is believed to show positive results. Simply take a teaspoon of olive oil in your hands, rub them together to warm the oil, and gently massage one breast at a time in circular motions, both clockwise and anti-clockwise.
2. Diabetes Management
A diet that includes extra virgin olive oil has been shown to regulate and balance insulin levels. People who consume higher amounts of olive oil in their diet have a lower risk of developing diabetes. The monounsaturated fats present in olive oil help reduce blood fats and aid in diabetes medication. Including olive oil in your diet can be beneficial for managing diabetes.
3. Anti-Aging and Alzheimer’s Prevention
Olive oil contains powerful antioxidants such as polyphenols, vitamin E, and phytosteroids, which fight oxidative stress associated with aging. When applied topically, olive oil helps protect the skin from premature aging caused by UV rays. Vitamin E, found in olive oil, restores skin smoothness and protects against aging. Another polyphenol called oleocanthal, present in extra virgin olive oil, is known to reduce cognitive decline associated with aging, including Alzheimer’s disease.
4. Blood Pressure Regulation
The monounsaturated fats in olive oil, along with a high amount of essential fatty acid called omega-3, help keep the heart healthy by lowering blood pressure. Omega-3 is considered an essential fatty acid because the body cannot produce it on its own. Consuming extra virgin olive oil in your regular diet, along with prescribed medication for high blood pressure, has been found to improve blood pressure levels.
5. Constipation Relief
Extra virgin olive oil can act as a natural laxative when taken in small amounts. It can be directly consumed to help relieve constipation. Alternatively, you can mix a spoonful of extra virgin olive oil with a glass of orange juice or a cup of warm milk. If constipation is a frequent problem, incorporating olive oil into your salads or cooked vegetables can also provide relief.
In conclusion, olive oil offers numerous health benefits due to its monounsaturated fat content. Consuming one to two tablespoons of olive oil per day is considered a moderate amount. This includes both the quantity used for health benefits and the amount consumed with food. It is recommended to include olive oil in your diet in moderation whenever possible to reap its multiple blessings.
